With a month to go before the NZ Cyclocross Nationals in Blenheim, the calm winter weather this past Saturday was the perfect day and good timing for a massive aerobic-themed training ride.

My training adheres to "Lydiard" principles, by firstly ensuring there is a huge base of stamina (the base of the pyramid), then layering power and speed on top. As we all know, the area of its base determines the peak of a pyramid. So, the bigger the base, the higher the peak will be. It is a simple idea that works brilliantly when applied to athletics.

This, combined with smart nutrition, and ongoing care to better manage old injuries, and strategies to keep well ahead of degenerative diseases, all ensure good health and performance despite advancing age.

So, this ride was the easiest yet, which is a delight. Bring on the cyclocross nationals!

If you wonder what cyclocross is, well it is a kind of cross-country racing around muddy fields on what is essentially a road bike. Races are usually between 45 and 60 minutes, so they are intense and thrilling events. The mud, tight cornering, and off-camber slopes are a sure test of skill. It is the safest way to race a bicycle, so great for young and old.

Here is the first half lap of a race from a few weeks back. Unfortunately, my camera came loose. I am still learning how to get good footage during the extreme conditions of these races. It is hard on the camera.

Enjoy the videos and remember that age is not a barrier to participating in events like these. It is about having a life filled with fun and adventure. The keys are to have an adventurous (free-range) mindset, and to continually invest in staying healthy.
