Garmin Body Battery: Tony's Super Smoothie Experience
Updated: 21 hours ago
A testimonial can be particularly valuable when someone has been discreetly monitoring something before making a change. This was true for Tony, who had been closely observing his Garmin Body Battery as the readings were consistently unsatisfactory and, notably, aligned with how he felt. Tony had been tracking his Garmin Body Battery for a while, providing an intriguing opportunity to compare his feelings with changes in his Garmin data.
Tony began taking the FreeRangers Super Smoothie consistently from early September 2025. What caught his attention was not simply that he began feeling better. His Garmin data changed at about the same time, and the improvement persisted.
The Super Smoothie itself is not an input into Garmin's Body Battery algorithm. If Tony's improved nutrition contributed to better recovery, sleep, resilience or autonomic balance, those downstream physiological changes might conceivably be reflected in the measurements Garmin uses. But Tony's graph cannot tell us whether that happened, nor can it exclude other explanations.
I asked Tony whether I could reproduce his comments and graph because I think they make an interesting case study. He kindly agreed.
Tony’s experience
“I have found the Super Smoothie excellent and worth every penny. Before taking it, my Garmin Body Battery was pretty terrible. We ordered the Smoothie on 2 September 2025 and I started taking it consistently from then. The improvement was pretty dramatic, and on the graph the impact was almost instantaneous. “It is a 10-day rolling average of my Body Battery high, to smooth out a lot of the noise. Since then I stopped tracking it so closely because the issue was solved and I started to feel much better. That ‘much better’ has gotten much better the longer I take the Smoothie. I took another 10-day snapshot recently and it was still sitting at 78, well above where things used to be for me. “I know there are problems with these sorts of metrics, but for me it put numbers to exactly how I was feeling. The Smoothie has been working wonders over the past year, and I’ll be a long-time supporter. For me it put numbers to exactly how I was feeling.” — Tony
What Garmin Body Battery Can and Cannot Tell Us

Tony has done something sensible with his data. Rather than concentrating on individual daily readings, which can bounce around considerably, he calculated a 10-day rolling average of his daily Body Battery high. This smooths some of the day-to-day noise and makes the underlying trend easier to see. I'd like to say here that wearables like Garmin watches do have a place in lthcare amd fitness, but I do have some cautions about where they might be leading us.
For much of the period from March through August 2025, his rolling average was generally sitting in the 40s and 50s, with a pronounced decline towards late August. Tony ordered the Super Smoothie on 2 September and began taking it consistently from then. During September the graph turns upwards quite sharply, continuing through October and into November, when readings were reaching the 70s and occasionally the low 80s.
The timing is certainly interesting. It is not, however, proof that the Super Smoothie caused the improvement. This is one person’s experience, not a controlled clinical trial, and there could have been other changes taking place at the same time. Tony himself acknowledges the limitations of these sorts of measurements, which is one reason I like his account.
For readers interested in the technology, Garmin explains how Body Battery and heart-rate variability are used in its wearable devices.

What is Garmin Body Battery measuring?
Garmin Body Battery is not literally measuring how much energy is stored in the body. It is an algorithm-generated estimate based on several physiological and behavioural signals, including heart-rate variability (HRV), stress, sleep quality and physical activity.
HRV is particularly interesting because the small variations in time between successive heartbeats provide information about the balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the autonomic nervous system. Generally speaking, periods of good recovery and sleep tend to recharge the Body Battery estimate, whereas physiological stress and strenuous activity tend to draw it down.
This is why I find Tony's graph interesting, but I would not describe it as proof of anything. Garmin Body Battery is not a medical diagnostic test, and Tony's experience is an observation involving one person. What catches my attention is the size of the change, its timing and, importantly, that the improvement appears to have persisted rather than disappearing after a few days.
Why nutrition may still be part of the picture
This is where Tony’s experience becomes particularly interesting to me. After more than 50 years working in health, rehabilitation, nutrition and sport, I have become increasingly interested in the cumulative effect of getting the basics right. We tend to look for one dramatic intervention when quite often the body simply needs a reliable supply of the raw materials required to maintain, repair and adapt - not another "health hack".
Food remains the foundation. Protein, fats, vitamins, minerals and the enormous range of compounds contained in whole foods provide the materials from which we continually rebuild ourselves. The FreeRangers approach is therefore food first, with supplements or concentrated nutritional products used to complement rather than replace a good diet.
Protein and collagen become particularly important as we age because we are not merely trying to maintain muscle for sporting performance. We need muscle to walk, climb stairs, lift things, maintain our balance, recover from illness and injury, and remain independent. Bone, muscle, tendons and connective tissues, including heair, skin nails, are living structures undergoing constant turnover, and adequate nutrition is required to support that process.
The Super Smoothie is intended to strengthen the nutritional foundations, not to replace real food or somehow compensate for a poor lifestyle.
What is in the Super Smoothie?
The FreeRangers Super Smoothie was developed as a convenient way of putting a useful concentration of nutrition into something that can be consumed every day. The current formulation combines New Zealand whey protein and hydrolysed collagen with New Zealand blackcurrant, turmeric extract and other selected nutritional ingredients. A standard serving provides approximately 24 grams of protein and collagen combined, plus a whole lot more. I've gone for functionality before flavour!
I regard the Smoothie as a nutritional foundation rather than a miracle solution. It can be particularly useful for people who skip meals, have a poor appetite, are very active, are recovering from physical stress, or simply struggle to obtain sufficient good-quality protein and other nutrients consistently from their normal diet. That has always been the reasoning behind it.
Was Tony filling a nutritional gap?
We cannot know from this graph. It is possible that Tony had been falling short in one or more aspects of his nutrition and that taking the Smoothie consistently helped fill those gaps. It is equally possible that other factors contributed to the change.
The value of his experience lies in three key observations. Initially, he was feeling unwell - blah! His Garmin data, collected independently, also showed unfavorable results. However, after consistently incorporating the Smoothie into his routine, his subjective wellbeing improved around the same time as the longer-term trend in his Garmin data showed improvement. Aside from the smoothie, it seems that not much else changed.
Most importantly, Tony reports that the improvement has persisted. His graph records the initial change during 2025, while his more recent 10-day snapshot, which is not shown on this graph, averaged 78 according to Tony.
That does not prove cause and effect. It does make a rather good personal observation.

Listen to the person as well as the machine
I am enthusiastic about technology when it helps us understand ourselves better, but I do not want people becoming slaves to their watches. Heart-rate variability, resting heart rate, sleep measurements and Body Battery can all provide useful clues. They remain clues.
Tony eventually stopped watching his Body Battery so closely for a very practical reason. He felt better. In some respects, that is the most interesting part of his story.
The numbers had served their purpose.
We should never confuse a Garmin watch with a medical instrument, nor a testimonial with scientific proof. But neither should we automatically dismiss a carefully observed personal experience merely because it is not a clinical trial. When somebody makes a clearly defined change, records a substantial shift in an existing physiological trend and simultaneously reports a sustained improvement in how they feel, I think it is worth taking notice.
That is why I asked Tony if I could share his story.
The watch did not tell Tony that the Super Smoothie was working. It gave him another way of observing a change he was already feeling.
A final word
Tony's experience is unique to him, and I wouldn't claim that everyone who drinks a Super Smoothie will see an immediate increase in their Garmin Body Battery. Human physiology is too complex for such assertions. However, if you are tracking yourself like Tony and observe changes in how you feel and your readings, I encourage you to share them with me. The shared experiences of individuals like Tony hold more value than a generic laboratory study.

What his experience does illustrate is something I have been advocating for decades: give the body good raw materials consistently, look after sleep and recovery, remain physically active, and then give these things time to work. Health is rarely built by one spectacular intervention. More often, it is the accumulated result of doing ordinary things well, day after day.
For Tony, adding the Super Smoothie appears to have coincided with a very favourable change. The graph makes his story particularly interesting, but perhaps the best part of his testimonial is the simplest. He feels much better.
