Dear reader and supporter,

I hope you are enjoying the break from the usual health articles? Here's another one for you.

The gun fires at 8am this coming Sunday, here at the Smithfield Mountain Bike Park, for my race in the 2025 UCI Masters Mountain Biking World Championships.

Yesterday, I did a recce of the course and filmed it. I’ve put the video together for you to get a sense of what we’re up against. The course looks technical, challenging, and, as always, a true test of strength, skill, and mental toughness. I'll add that my toughest and most intense rivals are here this year, and the target is on my back.

Take a look at the video here:

As I prepare to defend my title, I’m focused not only on the physical preparation but also on my mental state and how to approach the challenge ahead. This race, like all intense events like this one, is as much about strategy as it is about fitness and skill. The terrain will be rough, the conditions unpredictable, and every move, and every second counts.

This journey isn't just about the race itself; it’s a reflection of the Freeranger philosophy. It’s about embracing the challenges life throws at us and using them to strengthen ourselves—physically, mentally, and emotionally. It’s about applying the principles we live by, the values of resilience, self-reliance, and holistic well-being, into everything we do.

Whether you're a competitive athlete or just someone working to improve your health and fitness, remember that it’s not the extreme challenges that define us—it’s how we face them, and how we grow through them.

Thank you for your continued support, and I look forward to sharing more insights with you as I move through this event.

Stay tuned!

Gary

Great vid Gary, a nice window in on the upcoming event. It sure does look a bit knarly in spots, hope it dries up a little for race day, though its an even playing feild on the day. Look forward to an update and race day. Youre a legend man, am cheering you on. David

Yes, it is the same for everyone. Wet and slippery will favour me but the weather forecast is for dry weather.

Hi Gary,

All the best next week as you come away with the title again.

Ride as though you are second and are going to catch up on that guy ahead of you, even if you are in front…blitz them

You will be up with all the psyc stuff Gary……You want this Marcello guy to fear you….you act as though you have tht title again, put doubt in his mind and get him thinking a second place would be great…after all you are the champ.

There are 3 forms of giving when competing…Give up, give in or give it all you’ve got…..You are a “Give it all you’ve got” rider.

Go show them

Hi Gary,

(It's Bruce Thomson) I'm grateful for a superb (video) mountain bike ride experience. I wouldn't do it myself because I've had enough of cracked ribs and AC joint rearrangements. I do identify, however, because in a rough coursed harriers champs, I have a two-minute relative advantage over the road specialists, and can therefore stay in contact with the leaders.

I could say a lot more but words get in the way. Good luck.

One question when you have time:

How do you work your camera?

The camera is an Insta360. I like it. Look it up. But it has vulnerabilities for the lense, and mine is slightly scratched as might be noticed. I must get a new lens cover. The editing is quite easy but it took me many messy goes to become kind of acceptable. I had to upgrade to a more powerful computer which was more expensive than the computer. As we get older, whether cycling, running or just avoiding the cat or rug-end, we should all be doing this exercise: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JybGTgoVms
