Dad Has Always Looked After Us. But Who Looks After Dad?

Father’s Day is a chance to celebrate the men who have spent years showing up for their families, working hard, providing, encouraging, and setting an example for the generations that follow.

Three brothers, three dads, and three New Zealanders who have grown up with that strong Kiwi spirit of getting outdoors, staying active, and making the most of life.

For Gary, that story goes right back to childhood. He grew up in Putāruru during the 1950s and 60s, when life was very much “free range”, roaming the countryside, climbing trees, swimming in rivers, fishing, building forts, digging tunnels, and learning through adventure. At home, he cared for chickens, pigeons, doves and other birds.

That connection with movement, nature and independence stayed with him. In 1972, Gary went on to study Physical Education at the University of Otago, later gaining postgraduate qualifications in sports medicine and rehabilitation from the Otago Medical School. He has since spent more than 50 years working across health, fitness, rehabilitation, nutrition and performance.

And he has certainly kept practising what he believes in. Even in his 70s, Gary has continued competing at a high level in Masters sport, including mountain biking and cyclocross.

This Father’s Day is not just about sporting achievements.

It’s about seeing three brothers who are also fathers, continuing to enjoy life, stay active, laugh together and be there for the people around them.

There is something special about that. Because being a good dad isn’t only about what you provide for your family.

It’s also about being there, having the energy to take part, enjoying the moments that matter, and showing the next generation that looking after your body and mind is important too.

That is something we care deeply about at Freerangers.

Dads are often the ones encouraging everyone else, solving problems, working hard and putting their families first.

Father’s Day is a good reminder that they deserve looking after too.

For Gary, a father of four, that belief has also become part of the bigger Freerangers mission:

Helping make New Zealand the best place to live and raise a family.

So this Father’s Day, we celebrate Bruce, Gordy and Gary, along with every dad, grandad and father figure who continues to show up for the people they love.

Keep moving. Keep laughing. Keep enjoying life. And keep looking after yourself.

Because one of the greatest examples a father can give his family is showing them that a healthy body, a healthy mind and a meaningful life are worth taking care of.

And if you’d like to give Dad something practical this Father’s Day, Freerangers Super Smoothie is still $119 until 6 September, before moving to $139 from 7 September.

Not just another Father’s Day present, but a simple reminder for Dad to look after himself too.

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads and father figures in our community.

With love and appreciation,

The Freerangers Family

Gary, Alofa & Maxi
